The Leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK, in a statement released earlier today, Thursday, by the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK, Chief Uche Osuigwe has said, Prof. George Obiozor’s death is a great loss to Ohanaeze Ndigbo as an organisation, the entire people of Imo state, where the deceased hailed from, to Ndigbo as a people, and Nigeria at large.

In his statement, the group said, as a diplomat, world icon, and great son of Ndigbo, and Nigeria, Ndigbo, and world at large will surely miss him.

Chief Osuigwe said, Prof. Obiozor lived a ripe, and fulfilled life to a quality age, and lived a life of great achievement, but sad as he departed when the world needed him most and his wealth of wisdom.

In words of encouragement and hope, the group said, Prof. Obiozor has left the battle for the living, and advised for people to take this moment of his death to re-examine themselves and make amends where necessary to be able to create impacts that will affect people positively, especially to Ndigbo, and the entire world at large.

According to the Secretary- General, Chief Osuigwe, said, “…our thoughts are with the family, his community, the entire people of Oru LGA, Old Orlu people, the government of Imo state, and the entire Ndigbo” at this difficult time.

While expressing the group’s concern, he asked all the people to take solace in the Lord to enable all bear this irreparable loss. Chief Osuigwe prayed for his soul to rest in peace, the group concluded.

Prof. George Obiozor hailed from Awommamma, in Oru LGA, Imo state. He was the President- General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. He was the former Nigeria Ambassador in the USA, and also to the State of Israel.

Prof. Obiozor was born on 15th August 1942, he studied at the Institute of African Studies and Albert Schweitzer College. In 1969, he graduated in the University of Puget Sound, he had his Ph.D. in Columbia University.

He was the Director- General of the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, and later became the High Commissioner to Cyprus, before becoming Ambassador to Israel from 1999 to 2003, and then Ambassador to the United States of America from 2004 – 2008.

On January 9th 2021, he was elected as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural organisation formed for the welfare of Ndigbo in Nigeria.

Prof. George Obiozor died on the 26th December 2022, at the age of 80 years.
