The Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK and Ireland was on the 9th of April 2022 conducted an election for the position of its Secretary-General. Among the people that contested for the position were an Obibiezena Owerri, Imo state born businessman and scholar, Chief Uche Osigwe and Bar. Kenneth Odeoka.
The voting was done electronically which enabled the members of the organisation to vote massively from their different locations. Chief Uche Osigwe, popularly known and called (Agu Udo) emerged as the winner after the election.
The election has been described as intense, but most credible, free, and fair and Chief Osigwe won in a landslide which brought about a massive jubilation among the members, Ogene Ndigbo Newspaper gathered.
In his acceptance speech, Chief Osigwe showed his appreciation to the members and thanked Ndigbo in general for voting him as the Secretary General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK/Ireland. He promised to unite and work for the best interest of Ndigbo.
According to Chief Osigwe, he said, his administration will centre on transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness.
While interacting with Ogene Ndigbo Newspaper in London after the election, Chief Osigwe said, “We will bring the message of Ndigbo to every Igbo in the UK and Ireland, so that they will all know that they are members by default, and it is a home to be and call ours by all of us”.
He maintained that he will bring Igbo culture and values to a limelight. He restated, saying, “our culture can no logger be seen as outdated, and our Igbo language will be a proud and popular language amongst other languages in the world”. He further expressed his concern for their children to speak and write Igbo language.
He reiterated that he will raise Igbo cultural heritage to an estimable level and known to be identified with, and possibly make it a tourism centre in the United Kingdom/Ireland and at home.
In his reaction, Chief Osigwe expressed his eagerness to make Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK/Ireland strong and well- structured to serve as an umbrella body for any Igbo man or woman to run to for assistance when and if they have issues in the UK and be protected, because the organisation will stand and speak for them. According to him, he said, “this is what we will do”, he concluded.
