Last Wednesday in Owerri, the Imo State All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, women wing held the first political party August meeting in Nigeria.
APGA as a political party has insisted on 35% inclusion of women in politics.
All the 27 local government councils in Imo state were mandated by the state leadership of the party to kick start their various women August meetings and come out en-masse for the state-wide and finale celebration.
The State Chairman, Hon. John Iwuala who initiated the idea said his leadership is poised to work with the women for the betterment and upliftment of the Party. The Chairman maintained that women are key players in party building and Politics all over the world. He maintained that this is the first of its kind, Imo APGA is today the first Political party in Nigeria to initiate and hold a political party women August meeting. He promised the women that the next year’s event must be a superlative one.
The National Chairman of the party, Ozomkpu, Dr. Victor Ike Oye who declared the occasion open. In his statement read by the Imo state Chairman, Hon. John Iwula, expressed his pleasure for the wonderful event as organised by the women. He described women as the salt of the nation, saying a nation without women must fall. He advised them to sustain this event even when he must have left office as the National Chairman of APGA. He expressed his joy when he heard about the event, describing it as the first thing to happen to any political party in the country. He commended the leadership of Hon. John Iwuala in Imo state and the good working relationship with the women of APGA to have initiated such a wonderful event.

The National Chairman maintained, saying “the God we serve is a prayer answering God and must give us victory in the November 6th Governorship election in Anambra State”.
He used the opportunity to outline some of the achievements of the party since he took over in 2015 such as making APGA the first and only political party in Nigeria to have its own permanent National Secretariat at a choice location in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The establishment of ICT centre at the Abuja office, ability of APGA to win elections both in Abuja and other Northern states. Above all, the Independent National Electoral Commission – INEC, issued APGA a clean bill of health.
The event started with a prayer retreat, worship songs and praises by sister Gift Alozie and her gospel musical team. Intercessory prayers led by Rev Evangelist Nnenna.
They prayed for APGA victory in the forthcoming Anambra election, God’s direction, and guidance in both national and state level of the party. They also asked God to disgrace all those fighting to destroy the party. They prayed for Imo people and God’s protection from the hands of unknown gunmen, bandits, and kidnappers.
The state woman leader of the party, Chief Mrs (Dr) Maria Mbanuzuo (Mama Uwa) who was so elated with the kind of enabling environment established for the women by the state Chairman could not hold her joy as she was seen dancing from one canopy to another in great show of happiness. It was later observed that lots of passers-by had to disengage from their vehicles to witness the wonderful APGA women August meeting which caused a heavy traffic along the axis. Mrs Ijeoma Udensi spoke on the title: Women in Politics. She maintained that the 35% percent of women inclusiveness in Nigeria Politics has never been respected hence the women are being marginalized. She encouraged the women to always identify themselves positively in politics.

Another resource person, Mrs Nnennaya Enyinnaya Eneremadu spoke on the topic: Role of the women in society building. She also outlined what our women must do in their homes, communities, political parties, and the church etc. These are what women can do and help in building a healthy society.
Indeed, APGA women went home with joy and happiness. Both women that delivered lectures were invited by the state Chairman from Alliance For Africa, an international NGO that fights for Women rights all over Africa. They are to partner with Imo APGA women on empowerment and non-refundable grants to aid them in their respective trades and businesses.
The climax of the occasion was the training and empowerment of APGA women on the production of soap, izal, Dettol and perfumes with lectures on how to establish small scale fishponds, snail farming and poultry. Women went home with so many of the products manufactured right there at the event.
The anchor of programs of the event and MC of the occasion, popularly known as Ambassador, the Aboh Mbaise LGA woman leader led the closing prayers. Though after the closing, members refused to go, even passers-by who were attracted by the event refused to leave the arena but joined in dancing as Sister Gift Alozie and her gospel musical team took over the atmosphere, the state Chairman, Chief Iwuala said.
